Bird Journal Record Bird and Wildlife Sightings

Wildlife Journal

Begin adding sightings by first creating a new entry. An entry lets you group your sightings to a specific location. For example, the Blackbird, Blue Tit, House Martin and Grey Squirrel seen in your garden today can be assigned to the location 'My Garden'.

Record other wildlife like Butterflies or Mammals by downloading the latest wildlife checklists from our forum.

Smart Species Search

Search for Species

A checklist like the British BOU List contains over 700 species including subspecies. The smart search lets you type in partial species, such as 'B Tit’ for Blue Tit.

You will be surprised at how quickly sightings can be entered.

Smart Search Options

Customise your Search Options

Bird Journal gives you the freedom to search using local names e.g. Black-throated Diver, or scientific names e.g. Gavia arctica. You can customise your search further by switching to using quick codes e.g. BTO Codes of the BOU checklist, download the synonym list of BTO Codes.

Looking for a subspecies of the Yellow Wagtail? Be sure to select the ‘Species & Subspecies’ option to search through an extended checklist.

Add Using Checklist

Add using Checklist

Add using checklist is especially useful when filtering to the species you’ve seen within a specific location, such as Rutland Water.

To add sightings to an entry simply check the box next to the species name. Add additional information about a sighting by adjusting the properties on the right.

Sighting Properties

Sighting Properties

Pre-defined properties are count, photos and notes. Counts and photos can be disabled. The items in the properties area are completely customisable. Add, delete or rename properties from the main ‘Options’ screen, in the section ‘What to record’.
